Japans "kawaii culture" came about after 1899 with formation of many female only secondary schools.
Providing education for these girls created female-only spaces where the expectation of marriage and children was postponed, within this space the shoujo youth culture began.
Japan's post-war economic sucess meant this generation had massive purchasing power.
These girls woud go on to influences japanese culture and gave rise to kawaii brands like pink hosue and milk in the 1970s

ベルサイユのばら The Rose of Versailles! Such an incredibly influencial manga.It came out in 1972 and shaped
both the manga world and japanese culture, introducing Japans mainstream to French Rococo aestectics (1730s), this manga was a core influence on both Japanese tourists and lolita fashion.
Olive magazine especilly adopted this french style, teaching girls the lifestyle traits associated with lolita, drinking tea, bakeing etc.etc.
On the streets of Harajuku lolita fashion began, with kawaii and french Rococo influences, brands such as 'Baby, the Stars Shine Bright' in 1988
Mana (of Malice Mizer) had a huge part in the popularisation of egl fashion in the late 1990s. Visual kei (visual style rock) was really big at this time so musicans had a large influence over fans style. This first lolita verient was defined by its 'dark coloured clothing with innocent-looking, hyper-feminine hair and makeup'- gothic lolita bible vol. 1 which Mana does so well.

Sweet Lolita - pastels, fruits + candy shapes, very cutesy Gothic Lolita - dark colours, straight dark hair, lost falsies Aristocrat Lolita - subset of gothic, long flowing skirts, caoes , mantels and sleeves Punk Lolita - mixed punk clothing with other lolita styles OTT - over the top - lots of accessories

Naturally, its much nicer to believe that egl's namesake is from some other source, i suggest this blog post looking at the opinions of older fashion magazines if youd like an answer. Today the acronym egl (Elegant Gothic Lolita) is currently being used to bypass content filters on apps like tiktok and instagram where "lolita" is banned (evil cringe cencorship).
