Hello friends!
I've found lots of cute Lolita-style assets recently, so I'm gonna ramble about Lolita fashion as an excuse to use them hehehe

Have a look at my resources page to find all the cute photos! Though, most are taken from egl brand websites on the Wayback Machine
Japans "kawaii culture" came about after 1899 with formation of many female only secondary schools. Providing education for these girls created female-only spaces where the expectation of marriage and children was postponed, within this space the shoujo youth culture began.
ベルサイユのばら The Rose of Versailles! Such an incredibly influencial manga. It came out in 1972 and shaped
both the manga world and japanese culture, introducing Japans mainstream to French Roccoco aestectics, this manga was a core influence on both Japanese tourists and lolita fashion.
Lolitas first printed mention was in fashion magazine Ryukou Tsushin's september 1987 issue, this 2 page spread isnt the most complimentary...

Lolita had been around for a little while at this point, emerging in the late 1980s from Japans Harajuku district alongside Gyaru and Decora, other popular alternative fashions of the time. (i really really want to make a page for Gyaru and when i do ill link it here!)
while comparing lolita to esprit/chic girls they mention the book!
Chic:ロリータと聞いて「ナボコフだわ」と思う。When she hears Lolita, she associates it with Nabokov.
Lolita: ロリータと聞いてファッションを連想する。 When she hears Lolita, she associates it with fashion.

Nabokovs novel has been misused since it came out in 1955, with gross men world over relating to Humbert and movie adaptations depicting it as a love story. Naturally, its much nicer to believe that egl's namesake is from some other source, i suggest this blog post looking at the opinions of older fashion magazines if youd like an answer. Today the acronym egl (Elegant Gothic Lolita) is currently being used to bypass content filters on apps like tiktok and instagram where "lolita" is banned (evil cringe cencorship).
On another note, if you think Nabokovs Lolita should be cencored go read 'The Tragedy of Man Driven by Desire' 1958 from the NYT archieve 'This is still one of the funniest and one of the saddest books that will be published this year. As for its pornographic content, I can think of few volumes more likely to quench the flames of lust than this exact and immediate description of its consequences.'
